PEARCE is one of the busiest RAAF bases in the country in terms of total aircraft movements, and is home to the No 2 Flying Training School and No 79 Squadron

Head Contractor: Lend Lease
Scaffold: supplied by GCS Integrated Services
Manpower: erected and dismantled by JB Scaffolding

The Air Traffic Control tower is 36m high which required 215 Tonnes of scaffold.
The Auxiliary Buildings required 30 Tonnes of scaffold
The entire project was erected over 10 months and dismantled in 18 days

The scaffold was built using Lend Lease Safety Essentials with boarded decks every 2m and handrail erected on all working platforms from the lift below before they were boarded out so there was full edge protection before any proceeded onto the lift. This was achieved using new designed and engineered ladders which clipped onto ledgers at 2 meters allowing the scaffolder to erect handrail on the lift above.
Advantage: No harness required

There was a lower building connected to the tower so above 6 meters strong backs were drilled into the building and these carried internal legs of the scaffold which allowed for the Tower Roof to be erected.
Fire Retardant Unimesh was used instead of shade cloth.

Obstacles
• The base was fully operational during the install and dismantle
• All equipment had to cross live runways which was achieved by adhering to strict timetables set by Lend Lease
• Control of rubbish was also a challenge, all rubbish needed to be wrapped in plastic and bound in order to control F.O.D (foreign object debris) which is dangerous for aircraft engines
